Migraine and Cluster Headaches

MIGRAINE is a neurological disease. Typical symptoms include intense headache (sometimes one-sided), nausea, sensitivities to light and/or sound. Digestive disorders (diarrhoea or constipation) may occur, sometimes the diagnosis is:abdominal migraines… and there are also the more difficult cases of headache-free migraines.

Many long-term sufferers develop mild to severe depression, which backs the theory of metabolic disorders and disfunction of biogenic and trace/elusive amines.

Although the medical profession is sure about the pathways and functions of the headaches, the exact cause is still unknown and much research has still to be done.
A very interesting and conclusive study was done in 2003/2004 by scientist of the Headache and Comorbidity Center in Italy to find out if trace amines like tyramine, octopamine and synephrine (they are closely related to the classic biogenic amines) promote Migraines, Cluster Headaches (CH) and other types of primary headaches. They used a multichannel electrochemical high performance liquid chromatography system and tested patients during active headache phases and headache-free periods. The plasma levels of all trace amines were significantly higher compared with control patients without migraines/CH.

Many patients are predisposed to migraines, sensitive headaches, sinus headaches and cluster headaches. Sufferers have different triggers that may start a “chain reaction”: Environmental changes, change in sleeping patterns, the handling of stress situations and – in most cases - diet relation.
Many studies have been undertaken including DBPCFC (Double Blinded Placebo Controlled Food Challenges) and scientists conclude that the Biogenic Amines and the closely related Trace Amines (or Elusive Amines) are the keys to understand and treat migraines.

All foods are made up of hundreds of naturally occurring compounds that can have different effects on us, depending on how much we ingest and how sensitive/hypersensitive we are. Most Biogenic Amines and Trace Amines act as neurotransmitters which regulate mood, arousal, attention, sleep, appetite, sex, attention, stress, motivation, addiction. Many also function as digestive regulators, pro-inflammatory signals and allergy/intolerance inhibitors or even triggers.

This is the reason why there is a clear link between Migraine/Cluster Headaches and allergic reactions and/or metabolic problems.
Dirk Budka and his team of doctors and scientists are experts in Biogenic/Elusive Amines and studies Histamines, Tyramines, Serotonins, Phenylethylamines, Norepinephrine, Adrenaline, Dopamine, Octopamines, Synephrine, etc. since many years. He treats patients with Migraines, Cluster Headaches and related Gastrointestinal Problems and Depression successfully.
