+++TWO AFRICAN STORIES

FOOD MILES …
AND OTHER ADVICE FROM THE “WISE MEN FROM THE NORTH”

Kenya 1950/60s. People were weak in strength due to lack of protein in their diet, but not overly troubled. A project to farm fish was introduced by “wise men from the North” to give the people more proteins. The Kenyans learned quickly but soon these ponds became the perfect breeding ground for the Anopheles mosquito and hundreds of thousands of people started dying of malaria. The “wise men” departed thinking how unfortunate it was that these people could not profit from their teachings. And without explaining what has gone wrong, many villagers thought that the “wise men” came to instruct them how to grow mosquitoes.

Not too long ago, “wise men from the North” told African farmers that many of the wealthy people in Western Europe do not want to eat conventional farmed food treated with pesticides, fungicides, etc. but only organic food. Africans remembered that in the 1950s The World Health Organisation (WHO), armed with DDT, applied this poison to eradicate mosquitoes once and for all. Unfortunately, mosquitoes and the malaria-transmitting parasite Plasmodium quickly became resistant to DDT. Now still millions of people died from malaria… and many thousands from DTT side-effects. Many small African farmers welcomed the “organic farming idea” and started to make a decent living with fair trade schemes and/or organic growing.

2007. Living in gluttony, our society is now obsessed with global warming … and as a major part of this there is a huge obsession with food miles. Now the “wise men from the North” lead by the Soil Association is threatening to ban (total or partial) air-freighted organic exports. Of course this will lead to a collapse of organic farming in Africa. But who cares? Eating local produce is “In” and we do not mind that our farmers use tractors, heat up greenhouses and drive in their cars to work.

After all these past and present failures in Africa why don’t we just admit that we do not care about this continent at all? … And to cover up our guilt (if there is any left) why do we not ask all these ‘caring’ and environmentally thinking Rock and Pop stars, the Bonos and Geldofs, to organise another Africa concert… We always failed Africa, but we are feeling so good by giving Africans alms …

+++ The Federal German Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices made it clear that medicine/supplements which contains more than 20mg of beta-carotene must be labelled with a warning. "If you smoke 20 or more cigarettes per day, you increase the risk of lungue cancer by taking daily 20 or more mg of beta-carotene. Would be great if other countries can follow...

+++ Food poisoning will increase. The EU wants to exempt some food outlets from hygiene rules. Creating jobs in the health industry?

+++ Scientists breed cows that give skimmed milk. The sunday papers printed this news on the 27th of May. We have to wait another year for the cows to produce skinny lattes and chocolate milk shakes. And these journalists always say "scientists" (to ridicule real scientists?) instead of "madman/woman" or "paid lobbyist" or "clowns who want to show how to fool everyone".
The multimillion research was of course only done for the health of customers and not for profits.

+++ Do not drink alcohol when pregnant
+++ You can drink a little alcohol when pregnant
This was and is discussed in many papers during the last weeks. Some say that even a tiny bit can harm mother and baby and some say a little might be even good. Minette Marrin in the Sunday Times writes "Pure Nonsense About Drink And Babies". Ms Marrin does not seem to be a teetotaller. It all comes down to this: If you really have difficulties to live (at least for a while) without alcohol, then you will find lots of arguments and reasons to drink. I guess the one with "red wine is good for your heart" was probably researched by someone who drinks. But then again... it might be really good for your heart, but not really for your liver... +++

THE SUPERFOOD AND "ONE FITS ALL NONSENSE"
BIRD FLU AND THE GASTROINTESTINAL PORTAL

SUPERFOODS… imagine a food or ingredient so healthy, that it is beneficial to all of us. Eat it, eat it regularly, eat it en masse… and you:
Have more energy
Enjoy a better sex life
Have a better/faster metabolism
Avoid illnesses
Fight off cancer
Loose weight
Get rid of cellulite
Have no more depression
etc…

Sorry... there is no such thing as a superfood. Magazines, newspapers, TV/radio programmes love to report about new-ultimative-super-and-easy-to-handle-healthy food or products.
I do not blame the journalists for this growing and dangerous “one fits all” mentality in our society. And I do not blame the manufacturing/distributing industry… they just try to maximise profits…
I blame the health practitioners and in the case of SUPERFOODS I blame the nutritionists… and you find in every publication a practitioner with little responsibility and respect for serious ill people who are desperate enough to believe word for word of their “one-fits-all-mantras” WITHOUT mentioning the downsides…
Downsides? Yes… of course!

In the last years you read hundreds of articles about the benefits of SOY (good old fashioned "superfood")… and I do not doubt the benefits...
BUT: did you read also about the downside and dangers of soy? It is one of the major allergens in the world… it is a completely wrong food for women prone to breast cancer or for those who had breast cancer which was followed by lymphedema. Or prostate cancer… Or thyroidism (the list could be very long indeed)
Other superfoods in the past (I only mention the downside, there was enough written about the health benefits): PINEAPPLES: cause severe problems for OAS sufferers (oral allergy syndrome), fructose intolerance and carbohydrate mal-absorption.
AVOCADOS and SPINACH: absolutely NOs in case of enteral histaminosis or for people with Salicylic Acid Intolerances…
DARK CHOCOLATE: no further comment. Ask any diabetic…
WALNUTS: Tree nut allergies are growing very fast… and look HOW and WHERE they grow them (soil pollution, bacterial overload, etc.)

Superfoods have to be EXOTIC. The media won’t accept too many “superfoods” which grow around the corner.

So what will come in 2011?: Of course KIMCHI (from korea), which is a hot exotic version of good old SAUERKRAUT… Bacterial fermentation (lactobacillus strains are mostly used)… absolutely wrong food for sufferers with: Histamine Intolerance, Dysbacteriosis, and milk allergy… just to mention some.

Of course we have the GOJI berry. Aphrodisiac, betacarotene-power-source, cellulite-killer. Of course they are good for some of us... but do not forget: they grow in parts of the world where "organic" is not a good business. So... pesticides and fungicides will give additional 'health benefits'.

BIRD FLU AND THE GASTROINTESTINAL PORTAL

Despite all reassurances from food watchdogs there is growing concern about the possibility to catch the bird flu virus by eating contaminated food.

Pathogens, including viruses are normally ingested and/or inhaled. They enter the oropharynx and gastrointestinal (GI) tract through the epithelial barrier. Replication and shedding sites for viruses range from the tonsils to the rectum.
We are told by the food safety watchdog that it is “safe to eat cooked poultry and eggs”. A statement of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded “There is no epidemiological evidence to date that avian influenza can be transmitted to humans through consumption of food”. But they add at the very end “The existence of an undisclosed virus entry site in the intestinal tract can, however, not be ruled out …”

Many flu scientist disagree with the over-reassurance and “crisis communication strategy” which we all know too well since BSE or Foot-and-Mouth disease.
Masato Tashiro, a virologist at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases in Tokyo stated “Direct evidence of oral infection is lacking, but so too is proof against”.

The major site of viral replication is in the lung (pneumocytes), but scientists believe that the intestine is a potential portal as well.
A patient with H5N1 influenza virus infection was reported to have diarrhoea as the initial symptom, which raises the question of whether the gastrointestinal tract is a site of viral shedding and replication. In another report of a patient with a fatal H5N1 infection and severe diarrhoea and encephalitis in Vietnam, the virus was found in a rectal swab (read: Mongkol Uiprasertkul, Mahidol University Bangkok).
This again indicates that the bird flu virus H5N1 can attack all parts of the body… not just the lungs.
Menno de Jong, a virologist at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City believes that there is a gastrointestinal portal for the virus to enter a human body.
He also stated: “It appears this virus is progressively adapting to an increasing range of mammals in which it can cause infection, and a range of disease in humans is wide and clearly includes encephalitis.”
Dick Thompson from the World Health Organization said “It means the range of illnesses we have been looking for when considering a diagnosis of avian flu will now be expanded.”
Another quote from another expert. Albert Osterhaus, a vet and virologist at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam carried out a recent study in which cats became
infected with H5N1 after eating infected chicken. “Available evidence suggests that the gastrointestinal tract in humans is a portal of entry for H5N1”.

When the food safety watchdog concludes that cooking the meat and eggs thoroughly will avoid entry/contamination of/with the virus… they do not give any practical details, like: the chicken has to be cooked for a long time, and eggs must be boiled until hard. And… does everybody at home use separate knives and chopping boards and does they regularly wash their hands between handling different food stuffs?

One of the major problems is the so called “crisis/risk communication”. Over-reassuring statements have more negative than positive effects. A European Commission poll showed that nearly half of Europeans believe authorities favour economic interests over consumer health.
“Bird flu concerns over food have a devastating impact on the livelihood of millions of farmers globally and demonstrate that risk communication on this has been a total failure”, says Les Sims, consultant for the UN’s Food- and Agriculture Organization.

And who can forget May 16, 1990 when the former Tory Agricultural Minister John Gummer gave the public the worst example of “crisis management” during the BSE crisis when he fed his daughter with a burger in front of the cameras just to state “beef is safe to eat”.
