Gastroenterology and Inflammatory Bowel Diseases
Gastroenterology is a medical speciality that should involve the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the digestive system. These disorders may affect the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine (colon), rectum, liver, gallbladder and pancreas.
MODERN GASTROENTEROLOGY is looking beyond "exclusion diagnosis" and cooperates with IMMUNOLOGY and especially with MICROBIOLOGY.
Old fashion gastroenterology does not understand much of the interaction between humans and microbes and tend to underestimate diseases and long-term problems caused by bacteria.
Our aim is to build a bridge between Gastroenterology, Immunology, Microbiology and new treatment approaches through the use of chemical and herbal pharmaceuticals and diet.
The right nutrition… a proper diet is always a helpful addition to the prescribed medication or even a strict necessity – especially after surgery.
And in some cases a diet is the only known help available to solve a problem and/or to ease pain.
In most cases it is necessary to consult a gastro-intestinal specialist before seeing a specialised nutritionist.
The gastroenterologist is especially asked to evaluate the following problems:
- Abdominal pain
- Constipation
- Diarrhoea
- Difficulty swallowing
- Gallbladder disease
- Heartburn
- Indigestion
- Liver problems
- Pancreas problems
- Rectal bleeding
The specialist is able to diagnose:
- Acid reflux
- Cirrhosis
- Colon Cancer
- Colon polyps
- Crohn's disease
- Diverticulosis
- Gallstones
- Gas
- Hepatitis
- Pancreatic disease
- Peptic ulcer disease
- Ulcerative colitis,
but might have problems with diagnosing Irritable Bowel Synrome(IBS) and/or uses IBS as an umbrella term for "I don't know what it is, so let's call it IBS".
At this stage, most of our patients come to see us for further investigations.

IBD - Inflammatory Bowel Diseases
Flexispira Rappini, closely related to Helicobacter pylori
The intestines have the highest concentration of nerve cells in the body, besides the brain. This Enteric Nervous System (ENS) contains between 70 and 85% of the body’s immune cells. It is a so called data processing centre which handles complicated pathways of neurons, neuromodulators and neurotransmitters. There is constant communication between the brain and the gut particularly through nerve cells using serotonin, a neurotransmitter that is also very important for mood regulation. 1000 – 2000 nerve fibres connect both brains and enable the two to talk. When one gets upset, the other one does too.
In the past, many gut diseases were classified as psychosomatic. We now know that this is not the case. There is an element of the brain controlling the gut, but there is also an organic and physiological basis for the functional changes of the little brain.

CROHN’S DISEASE
Crohn's disease causes inflammation in the small intestine. Crohn's disease usually occurs in the lower part of the small intestine, called the ileum, but it can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus. The inflammation extends deep into the lining of the affected organ. The inflammation can cause pain and can make the intestines empty frequently, resulting in diarrhoea. Crohn's Disease is categorised as an auto-immune disease, but since 1967 (Schaefer, Germany) many microbiologist believe that bacteriell infections esp. through the MAP - Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis - play a major role.
ULCERATIVE COLITIS
Ulcerative colitis is a disease that causes inflammation and sores, called ulcers, in the lining of the large intestine. The inflammation usually occurs in the rectum and lower part of the colon, but it may affect the entire colon. Ulcerative colitis rarely affects the small intestine except for the end section, called the terminal ileum. Ulcerative colitis may also be called colitis or proctitis.
